The owl historian apprentice has successfully time travelled to Paris and exclaimed "OUAH" ( like YES! Wow! in French). She's riding on cloud 9!<br />
<br />
I used reproduction copies of an antique Parisian street map for the clouds, the big cloud is lined with French themed brass stampings, vintage watch faces and watch parts. A copper toned vintage tourist souvenir piece joins the owl as the focal point. Vintage pocket watch bezels are used as balloons here, well, this occasion definitely calls for some celebration! :D<br />

<br />
The time has been set to France in 1851. Contrary to popular time travelling beliefs, one does not travel at blasting speeds filled with blurry dizzy images. Instead everything is magnified and illuminated. One finds somewhat strange bizarre absurd sightings in the tunnel. Some of them are fellow time travellers while many are in fact old irretrievable memories and deep heartfelt sentiments. They, like anyone else, yearn to be remembered, not forgotten or forsaken. Memories which are retrieved will cease to loiter in the tunnel. The owl historian apprentice takes all she sees to heart.<br />
<br />
This 2nd piece of the Time Travel collection measures 16 inches by 16 inches on canvas. Antique bisque figurines, vintage hardwares, clock watch parts and brass stampings are glued onto the canvas with trusty epoxy glue. I like how the owl look with the antique optical lens over her right eye :D<br />

Finally, here's the first piece of my Owl Time Travel collection!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made a wish on Christmas 2011 that I would wish to time travel to France in the 19th century, this 1st piece documents the moment when gears started shifting in my head for this possibility. It turned out quite different from the sketch that I showed in the previous posting, especially the background. I thought a dark and almost black background gives that mysterious sense of imagination.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />This artwork measures 16 inches by 16 inches on canvas. The owl is embellished with vintage clock and watch parts acquired from a watch parts dealer from Eastern Europe. Her head is layered with mainly clock and watch gears, I added a bee in there too, inspired by the saying "I've got a bee in my bonnet!" !</div>

The last 2 months had been great fun and excitement as I searched local and online for supplies that I would need for my new collection of mixed media assemblage artworks. Ophelia the Owl also a historian apprentice is preparing her journey to France in the 19th century. Here's an initial sketch of how the 1st piece, "The Gears That Set History In Motion" may look like:<br />

<br />
Something was definitely gearing up within Ophelia to go back to historical times. She could hardly wait to be a first eye witness to the arts and cultural happenings of that era, she had to experience it for herself! She has come up with a list of people whom she wants to meet and places she wants to visit, she's still consolidating her list at this juncture, trying her very best to make the most out of this trip.<br />
<br />
Here are the pics of what I had hunted and gathered for this purpose (just part of it):<br />

I'm so delighted and pleased with my Valentine's Day gifts for this year! A 3.5x 3.5 inches "Kewpieful" Kodak snapshot from the 1970s and an early 1900s postcard of a dolly with glass-like eyes from Germany :D</div>

In the foreground of this photo is Cameo Kewpie doll with a sweet pleated dress and mary janes. She must be really tall, my guess is she must had been at least 20 inches tall or so. She was part of a Valentine's Day party decoration (scribblings behind the photo said so :D) together with several other Kewpie dolls on the altar-like shelf. They all have the googly side glancing eyes. Such a sweet Valentine's Day theme, lots of pinks, reds, hearts and I love how the antique looking ornate altar and mirror seemed to compliment the entire decorations. Besides being attracted to the Kewpie gathering, I'm taken by the wholesome-ness of this Valentine's Day party, all I can say is I would love to had been invited to this party.</div>

This Valentine-themed postcard must be close to 100 years of age! I think this postcard company must had lots of fun manufacturing postcards like this one. Firstly, her eyes are made of a type of plastic which gives the eyes an expressive glass-like look. Secondly, a ribbon was glued at the back of the card so that one can hang it for all to see. Lastly, another ribbon was glued and pierced through to the front of the postcard (where the doll's hand is) and out comes the ribbon with a heart that says "Token Of Love". Everything about this postcard screams cuuuute, from her little fruitpunch cocktail parasol, her shiny golden curls to her watermelon-like smile and yes, absolutely made my day!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The book Monet's garden in giverny: inventing the landscape proved to be a book filled with rich and insightful records of the impressionist master's life, painting endeavors and his passion for gardening at his giverny house (1883 - 1927). I found the book to be very useful in helping me to have an insider's peek into how Monet went about designing the landscape, planting the flowers and making it into another masterpiece filled with nature's grandeur. It's time to get to know Monet as a gardener and not just as a painter :D</div>

The parts in the book that made me smile the most were the letters that Monet wrote back home to his wife, Alice while he was travelling, totally charming! His plants and flowers were constantly at the top of his mind, he worried about them, missed them, just like how a parent would treat a child. </div>

"For the dahlias, I really don't think it's time to bring them in yet, but they could perhaps be labelled, because if there's a frost, it's impossible to know which color they are; lastly, I'm counting on you to do all the things I unfortunately haven't been able to tend t; I'd also like someone to collect a few sunflower seeds for me. (........) The damage to the garden you describe doesn't surprise me."</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"I forgot to tell you that for the chrysanthemums it would be a good idea to replant them in the vegetable garden, spaced well apart, so that they can grow, and on my return we'll plant them out; if a few hollyhocks have survived, look after them.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"I hope you found the house and the garden, and the greenhouse, all in good order; it would be good if you could keep an eye on everything from time to time; and that Pascal gets a bit used to having an eye kept on him, too; likewise, it would be good to know what is happening at Florimond garden, see if the vegetables are in good shape, and know what has been planted. Eugene ought to be go there twice a week; it would be a good idea to find out and go there the day he is there."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For Monet, everything was thoroughly controlled and mastered in his garden. The book went on to narrate the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
"The head gardener, Felix Breuil, and his team of five would receive precise orders, passed on to Alice when the artist is not in giverny, and Monet even went so far as to finance the asphalting of the road through Giverny to stop the dust from soiling his sumptuous water lilies. The artist left nothing to chance, primarily because he knew his garden would be his outdoor studio. As soon as he planted the first flowers in 1883, his intention was to paint them: I've had gardening to do, which has taken up a bit of my time, picking some flowers to paint them when the weather is bad." And when he applied for the permit required to make the pond, it was again to have "things" to paint.........the Giverny garden became his quintessential motif at the turn of the century. From 1900 to his death in 1926, Monet painted, and bequeathed us, nearly 400 pictures, not counting the panels at the Orangerie in Paris. More than half these works were devoted to his garden."</div>

The days of January have been filled with lots of reading and sourcing of materials for my up and coming solo art exhibition in <a href="http://www.tour-bangkok-legacies.com/neilson-hays-library.html"><span style="background-color: #a64d79; color: white;">Neilson Hay Library</span></a> in Bangkok this September. I'll be showcasing a collection of artworks of an owl named Ophelia (also a historian apprentice) and her time travel adventure impressions of France in the 19th century :D </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ophelia definitely has France's greatest writer of his age or some would say of all time, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Hugo"><span style="background-color: #a64d79; color: white;">Victor Hugo</span></a> on her list of French people whom she would love to meet as she goes back into time. A certain set of political circumstances during the second empire forced Victor Hugo, then a celebrated poet and writer, to leave France and live in exile that was to last nineteen years (1851-1870). First he lived in Brussels,then Jersey,then Guernsey. I was in particular very curious to find out how he spent his fifteen years in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guernsey"><span style="background-color: #a64d79; color: white;">Guernsey</span></a>, away from the tiresome and weary life of politics and the freedom to be himself. With the royalties earned from his remarkably successful first edition of Les contemplations, the writer poet bought the Hauteville House for a sum of 24,000 francs. Through this purchase he acquired Guernsey citizenship with all the security attached to it.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My deep curiosity in Victor Hugo's exile chapter led me to purchase this little booklet "Description Of Victor Hugo's House In Guernsey and Historical Notes" by Jean Sergent, I believe this booklet was printed in the 1960s. What I love most about this 16 pages booklet is its' casual approach of writing and inclusion of intimate details, it's like having a short film of Victor Hugo's exile chapter playing right before your eyes. Here are some of the notes which I extracted from the booklet:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"Hugo's mode of dressing was simple, his clothes were loose, but without carelessness. He liked low and soft-necked shirts, loose ties, broad-sleeved coats. When not exposing his bare head to the open air, because of rain or scorching sun, he wore a very large brimmed hat."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"He worked standing up and took long walks on most afternoons; his aim was to live near to Nature as possible. "</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"Every morning, after a cold shower, he would sit at the breakfast table and while eating he would start to complete some drawings, then he would begin work in the strange study, looking like a lighthouse, at the top of the house and from which is easily seen St. Peter Port and its harbour, all the north of Guernsey, the sea, the nearby islands and, by the clear weather, the coast of France."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"However, it is certain that during the fifteen years spent at Hauteville House, Victor Hugo has written many works of good quality, most composed of several volumes, such as La Legende des Siecles (1859), Les Miserables (1862), William Shakespeare (1860), Les Chansons des Rues et des Bois (1865), Les Travailleurs de la Mer (1866), L'Homme qui rit (1869)....."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPNdayHD94YwO-urjpwQi-aFLxrH7BSelryrBHFTR4K_w_6wM5pi6gl6vgxXUE9db2s69oOrnNDbg9bocVlJkKw89GAcNxxaVlMhIJNIfWGfR7GuoHvlOlEcpOqw9r3ZFv6R5KsP7zhME/s1600/victorblog1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gda="true" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPNdayHD94YwO-urjpwQi-aFLxrH7BSelryrBHFTR4K_w_6wM5pi6gl6vgxXUE9db2s69oOrnNDbg9bocVlJkKw89GAcNxxaVlMhIJNIfWGfR7GuoHvlOlEcpOqw9r3ZFv6R5KsP7zhME/s320/victorblog1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"Now let us go back to the year 1856 and the settling down of Victor Hugo at Hauteville House. His aim, as we said before, was that his house should not resemble any other and also that shapes, styles and colors should be in keeping with his tastes and thus surround him with some kind of spiritual comfort favourable to his work."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"All his spare time during the last months of 1856 and for most of the year 1857 was devoted to the purchase in antique shops of sideboards, chests,benches and cabinets, which he would hardly use as they were, but had them dismantled, reassembling them according to his ideas, not conforming to any known style......At that time the shops of Guernsey were still well supplied with goods obtained from centuries of piracy; French, Spanish, Dutch and Italian furniture could be found freely in the Island...."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: #674ea7;">"Thus we may say of Hauteville House that its' complete appearance is due to the creative power and the restless life of its' master. It tells about him as the cocoon tells of the insect. For its evocatory power as well as for its perculiar beauty one cannot visit Hauteville House without being moved, without feeling the emotion of entering the intimate abode of a very great man."</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hauteville House is unique, the tapsestry room is my favourite. The house looks more like a museum to me, a work of art and poetry by the master. So intrigued was I with the style and decor philosophy that I started a small collection of Hauteville House postcards from the early 1900s. I have not completed the entire collection of all the rooms in the house, below are 7 postcards of 7 different rooms.</div>

Hugo lived in Hauteville House until 1870, when he returned to France after the fall of the Second Empire, but he stayed here again for a year in 1872-73, for a week in 1875 and for four months in 1878. <br />
<br />
In March 1927, the centenary year of the Romantic Movement, the house was donated to the City of Paris by the poet’s descendants Jeanne, Jean, Marguerite and François.<br />

I've been charmed by the idea of returning to the days of the 19th century lately :D <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SomniaRomantica?ref=pr_shop_more"><span style="background-color: white; color: #741b47;">Marjolein Turin</span></a>, a fashion designer from Netherlands and owner of the brand Somnia Romantica, constructs exquisite clothings of that century that will make one eager to hop into a time machine in search of a victorian adventure. Marjolein's handmade pieces are inspired by history, often based on authentic patterns in her collection. Through this brand, she hopes to bring a touch of nostalgy and dreamy elegance into today's modern and hectic world. I must say she has successfully done that :D<br />
<br />
Thanks to Marjolein, I have the liberty to share some of her inspiring creations here. I'm in no way affiliated to her shop nor have I been paid any advertising fees to write this post, I'm just someone who has fallen head over heels with her works and hopes to wear some of them in the not too distant future :D She has a wider collection at her <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/SomniaRomantica?ref=pr_shop_more"><span style="background-color: white; color: #741b47;">shop</span></a> which I'm certain you will have a great time browsing. All her pieces are made to order, you can be sure that each piece will be lovingly tailored to suit your requirements, using only quality materials. I'm impressed by the comments and feedback left by her customers:<br />

When items arrived it was decorated in such a lovely box with a beautiful note. They items were sewn so beautifully and with love, your taste for materials is exquisite. I am so in love with my two peices that came from you, they will be heirlooms someday. I also saved the beautiful tags and brouchures from your shoppe for keep sakes. They fit beautifully. thank you again, Michelle Webster</span></div>

An owl also a historian apprentice and soon to be time traveller prepares herself for a trip to France in the 19th century. She listed some French people and landmarks whom she would like to encounter during this trip.<br />
<br />
1) Victor Hugo during his exile stay in Guernsey where he wrote the novel Toilers Of The Sea, using Guernsey and the Channel Islands as his setting....a visit to his Hauteville house is a must :D<br />
<br />
2) Monet's garden in Giverny, the garden is a masterpiece by itself! Stroll in his garden and observe Monet as he goes about his role as a fervent gardener, catch on his passion for art, for beauty and also to pick up a few gardening tips.<br />
<br />
3) Emile Jumeau and his famous BeBe Jumeau Dolls, visit his doll factory and be wowed by the exquisite process of making these dolls.<br />
<br />
4) Les Puces De Saint Quen, Paris antique flea market! A wealth of history and treasures to be uncovered in this place!<br />
<br />
5) Eugene Atget as he explores and documents Paris's historic streets and squares with his camera. His works have the ability to move the viewer, feels like watching a drama or reading a poem.<br />
<br />
She hopes to complete recording her findings and impressions of these visits on canvases by the close of 2012 :D</div>About Ellenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04987319900320826487noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2516747334531988319.post-47986164375569418322011-12-30T01:27:00.000-08:002011-12-30T17:57:22.911-08:00Wearable Owl Art Collection 2012<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">

These beautiful ornate brooches measure about 2.25 by 1.75 inches, the owls look like miniature paintings in these frames. Pin them on your jackets or cardigans for that extra unique flair!<br />

The glass domes on these bronze toned rings measure about 1 inch wide. They are not too small to go unnoticed, just the perfect size to strike a conversation piece. The rings have adjustable romantic filigree style bands to accomodate most ring sizes.<br />

There has always been this mental photograph in my head, it's me sitting on a thick carpet of autumn leaves which have fallen from the tree I am sitting under. I am reading a storybook aloud to a gathering of woodland creatures who have decided to stop foraging the forest floor for a while, we are sitting in a circle on a pinic mat with baskets of fruits, bread, biscuits and some tea. What a lovely autumn afternoon we are having! :D </div>

I feel emotionally charged by the rich colors of autumn. This red plumish colored autumn leaves provide a perfect background for this piece. The owl was painted with a warm tones of blues and browns, embellished with white pearls around the eyes and the wings with green and turquoise rhinestone gems.<br />

There's such antique-ish charm about these brass stampings that I simply have to have them in my art, found a bear cub, some tiny bunnies, a squirrel, a fox and a pair of birds. Was so excited when I found these tree branch buttons, each of them came from a different tree. There's the cherry tree, apricot tree, alder tree, pear tree, thorn tree, catkin tree and hazelnut tree. These buttons are very smooth and have been protected by natural tung oil.<br />

My husband may not be a sweet talker, does not shower me with gifts and can be quite forgetful at times. In spite of these, he still overwhelms me with his goodness and makes me feel I'm worth his time and affections. On days when we are at home (both of us work from home), he prepares our 3 meals and in between he will be at work on his gigantic canvases. Sometimes, the meals come with carved flowers from thick vegetable stems or heart-shaped sunny side ups.The list is long but there's a recent event that really moved me. On the eve of our flood evacuation to Hua Hin Beach, he was very quiet, we were pretty stressed by the mega flood that was coming our way. He then asked for my sunglasses and said he would want to try to repair it, he knew I would need it during our stay at the beach. Precious. Cherished. Nourished.</div>

This kittens with tiaras fabric is kind of apt for the feeling that my husband makes me feel. I deliberately stained the fabric with tea in a sporadic manner rather than tea dyeing the entire piece, just to remind myself how he embraces my obvious imperfections. Before I take a sip of my homemade morning coffee, I will close my eyes and inhale the sweet coffee aroma deep into my lungs, this immediately puts a smile on my day. During bath time, I will repeat the same routine with my body shampoo before lathering and rinsing. Perhaps, it's my way of allowing the smells and scents of the day stimulate the senses, adding a happy dimension to the day. Hence, I feel scent ought to be a constant companion throughout the day especially when I work and sleep. I choose Lavender, no other scent comes close to this one :D. It's no wonder why sometimes I feel like I am living inside a sachet of dried lavender and I love it for its' calming and relaxing effects.</div>

This whole lavender sanctuary was created with many fabric yoyos, I love the homely comfy charm that they possess. The yoyos were mounted on layers of lace. Apparently, there was another lavender loving owl, a pin brooch from my personal owl collectibles. Lavender chiffon roses to add the airy fairy effect to this artwork.</div>

Of late, I'm drawn to old vintage photographs of little girls and their dolls, such is the attraction to them that I now have a collection of such photos which I purchased on the internet. Perhaps, it's because I feel all warm and fuzzy at the sight of these girls beaming with smiles with their dolls. It was only much later that I figured it was possible that at a deeper level, I wanted to be a memory keeper of their once upon a time treasured relationships with their dolls, such moments were deemed too precious to be forgotten. Most of these little girls had doll buggies and prams, they would take their dolls out for a walk, acting like little mummies. This photo below is my favorite, she looked like she was going to to bring baby along with her to the market.<br />

I chose a sweet girly wallpaper-look fabric, tea-dyed it to give it a warm nostalgic feel. Painted the owl all cuddled up, obviously she's feeling warm and fuzzy surrounded by her favorite dolls :D The owl's eyes are embellished with white pearls and her feathers with rose-pink rhinestone gems.<br />

It was not easy to find miniature dolls with stuffings so these 10 dolls of vintage inspired design were custom made from fray treated fabric and were stuffed with polyfil polyester. Each measures about 2 inches tall. I added antique gold ribbon bow stampings, pearly hearts (they remind of me little girls' toy jewelry) and pastel resin flowers.</div>

If I could live for a moment in a master's painting, I would choose Pierre Auguste Renoir's Luncheon Of The Boating Party :D He portrayed 14 Parisians from diverse backgrounds enjoying a summer Sunday at Chatou, the Maison Fournaise along the Seine River. It was not just a group portrait, it was a scene, a moment in modern life that Renoir wanted to express through this painting. <br />

Susan Vreeland's New York Times Best Seller, Luncheon Of The Boating Party is a vivid novel of what went on behind the scene of this materpiece. Through the author, I was being transported to the summer of 1880 where Renoir organized the setting and his models to pose for him over several Sundays and it was here that he met his future wife, Aline :D I would have loved to be the silent observer of the happenings while Renoir worked passionately on his canvas.There was an interview with Susan Vreeland at the last part of the book and she expressed it so aptly that I couldn't agree more. When asked why she chose Renoir's Luncheon Of The Boating Party as a subject for a novel, here's her reply:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue;">Besides being the central masterpiece of the art movement that changed the look of art forever, it represents the qualities of the French soul: joyous friendship, appreciation of beauty, verve, and the intoxication with life. It invites us to ask ourselves: How can one live a life so filled with beauty and so rich with pleasure?............what is the painting about? In part, it's about the tantalizing riches of the senses. It evokes sensuous experiences beyond the visual: the feel of the breeze on the skin, evidenced by the fluttering scallops on the awning and sailboats making their way upstream; the frangrance of the fruit that fills the nose; the taste of wine that enlivens the palate; the feel of one's surroundings - one woman's fingers in a dog's fur, the sun on another one's back; the sound of songs sung by boaters as they row past, and by the models to each other. They are sucking pleasure out of everything, valuing the last taste in the glass and the colors surrounding them, noticing the look in soneone's eyes and engaging in spirited exchange.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: blue;">One looks at the painting and envies for an instant the characters' capacity to fill themselves with pleasure, to grasp the fleeting present and hold it as one might hold a bird before letting it go. The painting is imbued with this encouragement to notice the delicious details in life, to value the moment, and to each other. Seen in the press of high-speed living, it seduces us and urges us to stop and look and listen and taste and feel - and ultimately, appreciate. At its' best moments that's what fine art can do if we let it work on us."</span></div>

One of the major highlight of this piece is a miniature dollhouse framed painting of Renoir's Luncheon Of The Boating Party, measures about 2.75 by 2.25 inches. Felt the need to include a vintage watch face here because Renoir was determined to complete this painting before the summer lights came to an end, time was of essence. At the bottom right corner is a yellow brass artist's palette, I added some paint onto the palette. Other border embellishments included wooden butterflies, french colored ribbon, antique metal buttons, rhinestone buttons,an antique gold stamping of the side profile of a lady (I wanted her to represent Aline, the woman with the puppy who eventually became Renoir's wife) and orange red poppy fabric flowers, those were the flowers found on Aline's hat :D<br />

This piece is one that reveals my thoughts about the ageing process, such a delicate topic. To begin with, I'm someone who is concerned about ageing. Even though I do my fair bit to engage in some daily age-defying acts and routines, deep down I know and we know that it does not halt the ageing process, it just simply slows it down and the eventual state is still a certainty. So then, the question is how to age gracefully? Investment on the inward part should pay off in the long term. Weariness of the heart can add years to a person's face, hence cultivating (I use the word cultivating because it's hard work, just like farming) a positive and vibrant thought life perpetuates the mind's rejuvenating process, I suppose it invites the child of wide-eyed wonder and drives out the adult who has resigned to fate.<br />

I had in mind to construct an antique European garden. This is an elegant French garden fabric, I tea-dyed it to make it look older than it originally looked. Painted the owl on the fabric and embellished her eyes with lilac pearls and her wings with light green rhinestone gems. You will see broken bisque porcelain artifacts such as the doll head and two dogs, they were dug out from a factory in Germany's doll-making region in the late 1800s-early 1900s. I added some intricately-designed metal buttons from the Victorian era and vintage watch faces all around the border.</div>

I particularly love the antique-flavored verdigris patina stampings, that's why many of them are here. Someone from Latvia custom made these pretty fabric florals for me, getting the right florals was the most time consuming part of this piece but they were worth the wait :D</div>

<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">If you could use a color to describe your current stage of life, what color would you choose? I chose the color blue.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">Blue: caring, devotion, trust, wisdom, peacefulness, serenity, loyalty, truth, coolness, harmony.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">At this current stage, my life's pace is unhurried. There are minimal conflicts between my inner world and outer world, I do not feel the need to compartmentalize my life into personal or work, there's really not much distinction between the two. I treasure my personal moments, I go on mind trips with my books, walk the dogs, take silly photos, be a taster for my husband's culinary exploits, experiment with my art and keep a daily journal so that I can remember to be grateful. Most importantly and also the best part of it all is I get to choose where to spend my time, what to spend it on and who I want to spend it with because time is a resource that's irretrievable.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "Courier New", Courier, monospace;">I chose a french blue for the background and the owl. The owl was then painted on a blue with white florals vintage fabric which I applied some diluted white paint to give it a softer look. I constructed this tranquil garden scene using hand-dyed laces, blue yarn, antique watch faces, wooden butterflies, indigo blue rhinestone gems and custom made blue-beige fabric flowers with pearls with lace. The owl was embellished with white pearls around the eyes, milky white rhinestone gems on the wings and a simple silver hair bow :D</span><br />

Flipping through a magazine one day, I chanced upon a page of a model wearing a leopard print dress lined with wide floral laces horizontally across the dress and she's right in the middle of the savannah grasslands. I love the wild yet romantic look, it's absolutely beautiful.Sometimes, thoughts don't come to me in logical rational fashion, this dress and its' entire mood led me to think of a life that abandons imposed standards and following one's choices and loves, being in one's own natural element. This, I suppose is a foundational basis to which we attract the beautiful things into our lives.</div>

I sourced for a suitable leopard print fabric to which to paint my owl on. Then of course I needed some safari friends, the 4 of them are vintage old stock brass stampings from the US. I love the petite beigy floral with gold tints appliques and used them for the basis of the borders. Then began the hunt for some vintage fun earthy looking buttons to embellish the borders. Happy to chance upon a beautiful gold sequinned butterfly applique in a craft shop filled with eclectic items. White pearls are added to the owl's eyes and light topaz rhinestone gems add sparkle to the owl's wings.<br />

Inspired by the age old charm of the seas and oceans of the world, its' vastness,deepness, secrets and mysteries in them that have captivated the imagination of humankind. I feel that it's hard for one to be unmoved when one comes face to face with the sea. It evokes feelings of awe and wonder, at times, it even feels that it's issuing a "come-on" to put aside your present baggages, to step out from where you are and embrace a new world of unknowns. The sea is like a wise old traveller, he has seen it and been there, there's nothing that can daunt him easily, nothing that can quench his thirst for adventure. He simply moves on, ever learning, ever adapting.<br />

I distressed the vintage love song music sheet to give it an old world look. Then I painted a serene aqua bluish green owl and embellished aqua pearls around her eyes and matching rhinestone gems on her. She's surrounded by strings of pearls,mother of pearl buttons, elegant laces, chiffon fabric roses and sweet seahorses.<br />

I often daydream that if I could hop onto a time travel machine, I hope it could transport me to a victorian tea party in a garden full of roses and a table filled with multi-tiered stands of colorful pastries. While the adults are engaged in their tea chats and pastries, I love to imagine that somewhere in a quiet corner of the rose garden, there's a little girl enjoying her version of tea party with her dolls and teddy bears. The little girl has her own miniature tea set and she's busy playing host to her doll and teddy friends. There's such an endearing charm to all of these :D<br />
<br />
<div id="yui_3_4_0_3_1324106300782_1053">
Searching for the right rose fabric took me quite a while and I finally settled for a shabby chic warm beige piece with roses and tiny stars. I love the wallpaper look that this fabric was able to provide. I went for dusty pink shades for this owl,white pearls and pink rhinestone gems add sparkle to the owl's eyes and wings. </div>

<br />
The oval border was embellished with many delighful pieces of miniature ceramic tea cups, saucers and teapot. And of course, the cakes and sweets! Fabric roses, butterly applique, a teddy bear and pink floral themed yoyos add lots of sweet victorian charm. One of my favorite piece has got to be this fine porcelain cameo of a girl and her doll, it's mounted onto a vintage style brass frame.<br />

<br />
It was one of those afternoons when you just want to listen to classical pieces and I chose Moonlight Sonata. After a while, I found myself drawn into its' beautiful haunting tunes and I ended up playing it all over and over and over again. I was stirred from within and this artwork was my response to the stirrings in my heart. Without any delay, I went online and hunted for a vintage piece of its' music score. It was a successful find, I was thrilled!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8zVHMnV7d88uhfcVIjqt7gYy8MV37b2NkXTUwXWndxZfWus6JZz2_JAvpYYOdeuXC7o_CrulFVfKU96AZSyWpOBryUaHmWAUOZv4zYRko6p2jVBqO2yEgi8wgxDTCsR9TCUlBkf3ooyw/s1600/moonlight.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" oda="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8zVHMnV7d88uhfcVIjqt7gYy8MV37b2NkXTUwXWndxZfWus6JZz2_JAvpYYOdeuXC7o_CrulFVfKU96AZSyWpOBryUaHmWAUOZv4zYRko6p2jVBqO2yEgi8wgxDTCsR9TCUlBkf3ooyw/s320/moonlight.jpg" width="240" /></a></td></tr>

<br />
I then proceeded to sketch and brainstorm the elements and objects which I felt were in sync with the music's mysterious, enchanting and melancholic qualities.<br />
<br />
First, I painted an owl on the music score and added white pearl cabochons around the eyes and sparkling dark indigo blue rhinestone gems (they really sparkle in person, especially when light falls on them :D) on the feathers. Then I went on to embellish the border with an antique china doll head reclaimed from the site of one of Germany's famous Thuringia region doll factories, doll head was likely to be manufactured in the early 1900s. The other players include a vintage watch face, black lace, appliques, vintage buttons, shabby chic black and white floral fabrics and a custom made singed organza chiffon flower. (All elements were glued securely using trusty glue with industrial strength)<br />
